A hefty gopher tortoise, a murder of crows heckling golfers, an enormous Buddha statue, low bridges over inky creeks, expansive flat woods and big sky with pillowy clouds invite riders to a new segment of trail that crosses the heart of Florida.

The section veers from downtown Titusville, angles past Mims into the north end of remote Brevard County and crosses into Volusia County near Maytown.

I lured my wife there Sunday with this: let’s go for two hours and 20 miles of sightseeing on Brevard County’s Florida East Central Regional Rail Trail.

Oops. Turns out it was 40 miles. My bad. She got over it. We ended at Playalinda Brewing Company and Hardware Store in the cutesy core of Titusville for AC, ice water and a couple of restorative pints.
